Its official, Government travellers to stay in star graded establishments!

Don’t get left behind and get your accommodation establishment graded to access government travel spend

In September 2017 the National Treasury Department issued the year’s National Treasury Instruction which recommends that all travellers on official government travel stay in TGCSA star graded establishments. It’s encouraging as The Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) that one of our key stakeholders understands that TGCSA’s star grading system promotes optimal value for money, and ensures that these graded establishments consistently offer services and products to a certain standard. With more than 5 000 quality graded establishments in South Africa, government accounting officers can be assured of predictable and guaranteed levels of quality when booking for domestic accommodation.

There couldn’t be a more opportune time to ensure your membership is up to date and your accommodation still meets TGCSA’s stringent grading criteria or to strive to improve your grading by improving the quality of services and products your establishment offers.

South African Tourism CEO, Sisa Ntshona expressed his gratitude, “It’s encouraging to see that our stakeholders in government remain dedicated to working with us to grow the South Africa’s economy through a sustainable tourism industry. As South African government officials, we are contributing to an improvement cycle of the industry every time we choose to stay at a TGCSA star-graded establishment. Our stay at these establishments provides confidence to visitors which subsequently guide the business owners on where to upgrade their facilities, resulting in further visitor satisfaction. This will enable the destination to maintain a stronger competitive edge, globally.”

Make sure your business doesn’t get left behind and has access to this segment of the domestic market. If you are not a graded establishment, here are some basic customer expectations when staying at a 1 to 5 star TGCSA graded hotel, bed & breakfast as well as guesthouses:

  • On-site representative must be contactable 24 hours, 7 days a week.
  • Servicing of rooms such as linen/towel change, removal of rubbish and cleaning should be available 7 days a week
  • Bathroom facilities must be en-suite whereas bathroom facilities in Bed & Breakfast or Guesthouses must be either en-suite or be exclusively for the use of one room
  • Grounds and gardens must be well maintained and safe

It’s easy to ensure that the next time a government official is in your neck of the woods; your accommodation establishment is ready to do business as a TGCSA star graded establishment.

Establishment owners can register for membership online and if the establishment qualifies, an assessor will be dispatched to evaluate the premises and amenities in person.  The assessment is then verified and processed and the number of stars awarded depending on the level achieved.

A star grading is valid for one year only and is renewed on payment of the membership fees and a follow-up visit by an assessor.  This process enables establishments to enjoy the benefits of the grading scheme without the inconvenience of having to reapply for their grading status every year.
